Developer Tools 2 0: How Microsoft, Pieces for Developers, and Google are Leveraging Generative AI to Enhance their Suites

Before even the map, we put out this blog post of what was going to happen. There was some stuff on the internet that wasn’t that good, and so I literally put it in OpenAI, “the difference between classical AI and generative AI,” and it started spitting out amazing stuff. It wasn’t just a joke that the article was co-written with GPT-3; it actually was.

Generative AI is inherently creative, so it’s natural to see a lot of innovation in other creative fields. Runway generates, edits and applies effects to video that met the quality bar for the Oscar-winning team behind Everything Everywhere All at Once. Descript focuses on both podcast and video workflows, using generative AI to make the editing process less laborious.

And, equally surprising, the approximate nature of generative models makes them better than expected at creative work and less than completely trustworthy on rote, mechanical tasks. Achieving artificial general intelligence, that futuristic self-learning system that some fear could threaten humanity, is still a moving target. But there can be no doubt that the progress of large language models over the past year has been Yakov Livshits transformative—and their applications increasingly general.
